It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Thomas Leigh Joy at the age of 82. Mr. Joy passed away the morning of November 27, 2007 after battling complications from a stroke. Mr. Joy served as the President of B. Frank Joy for 27 years and as a member of The Joy Companies, Inc. board for 52 years. Mr. Joy was a charismatic and much loved leader and friend.
Mr. Joy was born on March 6, 1925 grew up in Washington D.C. and graduated from Roosevelt High School. He served with the Marines during WWII earning a Silver Star and a Purple Heart at Pelelui and also served in Okinawa and China.
He began his career with B Frank Joy upon returning from the war on January 2, 1946. In 1955 his father Bernard Frank Joy passed and Mr. Joy became President of BF Joy. He held that position until his retirement in 1985. He was an active member of the board from 1955 until October 2007, when he retired as Chairman. At that time, he asked his grandson, Kevin, to the join Board, making him the fourth generation of the Joy family to serve on the board.
He is survived by his wife Frances; his children Ken Joy, Gail Higgins and Mary Susan Haley; and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Bernard F. Joy and sister Virginia Joy Groves.
